Engineering A Career In Sustainability

Pursuing a career in sustainability, especially in engineering, often entails working onsite and frequent travelling. However, that didn’t stop Intan from stepping up to the challenge!

As a site engineer in ENGIE Services Malaysia, Intan works with the project management renewables team. Her responsibilities include planning, coordinating, and executing various projects and renewable energy plants.

Joining ENGIE in 2020, Intan cheerfully recollects the opportunities she has been given regardless of gender and based more on her ability to perform and willingness to grow.

She highlights “I’ve seen myself developing a lot, regardless of gender. ENGIE has never been biased whether it comes to executing projects onsite or for my own self-development.”

Reaching New Heights At ENGIE

Developing an environment of progress and developing one’s talents isn’t easy. However, at ENGIE, there is a rich culture of professional self-development across the organization with diverse trainings and skill enhancement sessions with industry and domain experts.

“I treat my managers, colleagues, and people in the company as my mentors. Everyone has their potential, expertise, and knowledge in their field that I can learn and grow from,” shares Intan.

Sustainability Goes Beyond A Career

While Intan’s role revolves around developing solar projects such as Kuantan City Mall and Mycron Steel Berhad helping to provide renewable power to the world, her motivations for sustainability are very personal and heartfelt.

Intan is responsible for project execution, managing and ensuring contractors adhere to safety rules and compliances.

She finds practicing sustainability crucial in ensuring future generations can enjoy what we have today. Intan mentions, “It’s my responsibility to take care of the environment and this planet like many generations have taken care of our Earth before us.” 

She wants to help lessen the impact of climate change as much as possible, especially from the growing challenge of carbon emissions from today’s increasingly globalized world. 

Intan envisions her career to progress towards a holistic understanding of the entire lifecycle of solar system installations, especially how the systems can be reused and recycled to minimize waste.

Embracing Gender Equality, Unlocking Potential

To Intan, gender equality is when people, regardless of their gender, have equal rights, responsibility and access to opportunities. That makes for a more harmonious and joyful world.

Intan highlights her working experience at ENGIE, “I’ve always felt comfortable working with colleagues from diverse backgrounds, and everyone is being treated equally. I think this has allowed me to grow more as well!”

When quizzed on gender stereotypes in society at large, Intan hopes that we can shed rigid thinking such as gender roles and that every individual should pursue their interest based on their knowledge.

Companies can benefit from this by playing into the strength and expertise of their employees and not based on gender.

Intan recalls an experience where she was given the opportunity, stepped up to the plate and took on a transfer assignment in Kuantan despite leaving her family behind in Kuala Lumpur, 4 hours away.

She succeeded in her role and pushed past her boundaries to achieve new heights and satisfaction in her career.
